Most people wake up every morning to the sound of their alarms realizing it is just another day. They carry on with their daily chores like they have been doing for years and rush off to work. It’s almost as if they are in a repeat mode day after day. Even on the way to work, they are surrounded by thoughts about work and the things that need to be taken care of at home.
Amidst all of this, they forget to care for their own physical and/or mental well being and begin to lead unhappy and unfulfilled lives. This resentment begins to reflect itself in their day to day attitude causing them to lose their calm whenever faced by an unprecedented situation or an obstacle. Consequently, they become agitated easily and can have severe mood alterations that can cause havoc to their personal and professional lives.
Therefore, in order to free yourself of autopilot mode; all you need to do is adopt a change in the way you perceive things and in particular the mornings.
Perception literally means ways in which something is regarded, understood or interpreted by us (as per Oxford Dictionary definition). It helps us to interpret situations as good or bad.
For example. A new competitor enters the same line of business as you and is targetting similar market segments. At the end of the year, you notice that your sales have been hit considerably on account of a major decline in your market share (with the advent of the new competitor).
You interpret this situation as really bad for your business. You fret about it and end up spending your precious time worrying and asking several questions again and again to yourself –
Why is this unfortunate event happening to me?
I tried so hard . What could have gone wrong?
Probably; I am not good enough and it’s time to wrap up my business..
While you were spending so much time worrying about your business, your competitor was probably making new plans to acquire more businesses. The situation is worsening and you don’t even realize it. This is an ‘unhelpful perception’.
An insightful extract from Ryan Holiday’s book, The Obstacle Is The Way–
“Too often we react emotionally, get despondent, and lose our perspective. All that does is turn bad things into really bad things. Unhelpful perceptions can invade our minds– that sacred place of reason, action and will–and throw off our compass.”
It’s okay to worry in unfavorable situations however just don’t take too long. It is essential to see the situation as it is and accept it. Only then, you will be able to perceive what’s underneath and discover choices that you can still make. Choices that were there all this time waiting for you to unearth them.
Similarly, a shift in perception towards mornings can really alter the outcomes for you. Each morning provides a wonderful opportunity to rewrite the pages of your life. Start viewing each day as a new beginning to do something new, to redefine life on your terms and to live each day as a magnificent realization of the life you dreamt of. This will help to stay positive, instill a spirit of enthusiasm and reaffirm faith and self-confidence in your own abilities.
To summarise; a change in perception coupled with only a few morning routines will leave you supercharged for the rest of the day.
Focus on a disciplined life
Go to bed early so as to rise up early the next morning. As a general rule, most people require eight hours of sleep in a day although this varies from individual to individual depending upon their sleeping habits, conditions, and genetic traits. On average, a person needs to sleep from 7-9 hours a day. A proper sleep schedule is essential to remain focused and energized during the day therefore; set your sleep and wake up time for all days in a week. This will regulate your body clock and help you to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day.
Head out first thing in the morning
You can take a leisure walk in the nearby park or in natural open spaces near your residence. Walking outdoors in a natural setting is extremely helpful in calming our senses and mind. There is so much to hear and see all around you. Just a breath of fresh air is all it takes to make you feel lively and rejuvenated.
According to a study published in Social Science and Medicine; the regular use of natural environments for physical activity has been associated with a lower risk of poor mental health as compared to physical activity in other environments. Thus, walking in parks or natural setting can be really beneficial.
Another research published in Health & Place has demonstrated that the restorative impacts of walking in natural environments appear to be most beneficial for those with poor health (in comparison to those with better health). Therefore, people at a greater risk of developing mental health issues like depression, anxiety, etc benefit more than those with better mental health.
Engagement in group social activities ex. Yoga, Zumba classes or any outdoor excursions weekly/monthly is so exciting and absolutely fun. You can make new friends and it provides you an opportunity to interact with several new people, learn different sets of perspectives. In addition, you are more likely to develop the habit of exercising in a group and actually be able to continue it for a long time as compared to doing it all by yourself. Furthermore, group activities instantly take off your mind from worries thus making you feel better.
Tune in to your favorite collection of music be it a hip hop beat or a calm peaceful track. Listening to music can fend off mood alterations, lowers stress and anxiety levels and improves your mental well being as a whole.
Break a sweat
Exercises in any form be it cardio, yoga, strength exercises or balance exercises bring about a tremendous change in mood and energy levels. They increase our fitness, strengthen muscles and make you feel so good and satisfied.
Besides, you could try going for a jog or run in a natural environment or do a couple of sun salutations in a park occasionally to break the monotony of working out in a gym every day.
You are what you eat.
A healthy morning breakfast goes a long way providing the strength and energy to carry out several tasks over the day without feeling fatigued or tired. A lot many people out there skip their morning breakfast and rush for work. This practice needs to be avoided at all costs.
Furthermore, when you wake up your body is low on sugar and it needs those vitamins, minerals, and sugar to make the muscles work at its best. Breakfast helps replenish those requirements. Skipping breakfasts can only make you feel out of energy and you tend to overeat high-fat food later during the day. Therefore, it is very essential to have a healthy breakfast.

Believe in yourself

Belief in one’s own self is enough to make you move mountains and overcome any obstacles lying in your path.
Don’t let negative thoughts creep into your mind. Don’t allow other people to make you feel bad about yourself or make you feel incapable of achieving something. Most importantly, believe in yourself and do all that is required to make that happen. Change might not happen immediately, however, just sincerely believing deep within is enough for your mind to work around solutions to make it possible.
Every morning is a beautiful gift handed over to you to make it worthwhile. Unbox the gift with awe. Work hard and find the treasure waiting for you. Each day is meant to be lived fully believing in yourself and your dreams.
Finally, all it takes is a change in perception (and a few good habits)!!
Besides, I don’t expect you to take up all these habits at once. It won’t be possible. Just pick whichever is possible for you and once you have developed a habit; you could pick anything else if you like.
